I cannot believe this! Skin cancer on a gold fish. wow i would definitely not spend $100 to $1000 on a .10 cent gold fish. Its amazing how some people are so attached to their animals. Vets are now doing catscans, MRIs, and surgery on them. I find this to be one of the most amazing things I've ever learned about. I would love to see this is person!
Wow! I can't believe people are willing to spend that much money on a fish! It is so amazing that they can do so much stuff to save them from cancers, or broken bones or bouncy problems. Its weird that people get so attached to animals that they can't even hold or barely touch. This is one of the most interesting things I have ever heard of. Maybe in a few years this won't be so strange to people.
Surgeons have begun surgeries on fish for hundreds to thousands of dollars. The surgeries can be for buoyancy problems to broken bones on fish. People have become so attached to their fish, just like dogs or cats, that they will take them to the doctors to save their life. The most remarkable thing to me was that they used breathing tanks and ventilating tubes to keep it breathing. These fish surgeries are now routine at that particular veterinary office, and may become a normal part of everyday life all over! I can't wait to see how these practices evolve throughout my lifetime. We may one day be performing surgeries on hamsters, turtles, snakes and mice, even pet tarantulas!!!
(sorry- i accidentally posted under jennifers account because she signed onto my computer last. dont count that last comment under her account. thank you)
It's amazing how they can actually do surgery on a fish. The way they put the anesthesia in the water that went into the fish's mouth from a tube was really amazing. I never knew how it would be possible to perform surgery on aquatic animals. If I had a fish that I was really attached to and it needed surgery or it wasn't going to live I would probably take it to the vet and do whatever I could to save its life.
WOW! I can't believe they now have surgery for fish. I think this is a great idea for people who love fish, like me. This is truely amazing that they can save a goldfish from skin cancer, or broken bones, or bounacy issues. This is the most interesting story i have heard this year. If my fish had skin cancer or any broken bones, I would be gladly willing to pay any amount of money to have him or her saved.
It is amazing that surgry can now be performed on a fish!!! The only thing about the surgery is that it is very very very expensive. I do not think that I would spend this much on my fish. Although I do love animals and would be sad if my fish died, thousands of dollars is just too much for a fish. I think it is interesting that a vet was able to remove skin cancer from a fish and keep the fish alive throughout the operation. I agree with the last statement of the video, that in a couple of years taking a fish to the vet could be common and nothing out of the ordinary.
Good posts guys... Wow, did a fish bite you sometime in your early childhood? Thanks for a honest opinion though... I think part of people's connection to animals as pets is part function of time, investment, and anthropomorphic projection- Increase or decrease these variables and we find certain people who are really connected or visa versa. I used to think the same as you did- but when you care for something and watch it grow on a daily basis, you project a bit of humanity onto whatever it might be. Some people are willing to invest more than others. Good conversation.
This is by far the most outrageous article I've read so far. I can't believe people are willing to spend thousands of dollars on very expensive surgeries for their fish. With all that money they spend on the surgery, they could purchase hundreds of new fish. It is truly amazing that they are able to perform these surgeries on fish, I never thought this would ever be possible. Some people must really care for their fish like children, if they are willing to spend so much money on them.
Im having a hard time believing this! people actually spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on fish surgeries or visits to the vet. To be so attached to something you cant really hold or touch or pet is really amazing, and to have that bond is crazy also. To be willing to have spinal surgery or skin cancer surgery on a fish is truly unfathomable. But like they said in the video. Birds were not taken to vets up until the 1900's. So now fish might also be apart of veterinarian services as well. I have fish.... but i don't know if i would be willing to go to this extent.
This is unbelievable, a fish that has skin cancer. The surgery unfortunately can range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. Another thing that is anazing is that the surgens can preform CAT scans and MRI's on the fish. If I had a pet fish and it had cancer I don't think that I would spend hundreds of dollars to treat it. This video is very interesting and it would be great to see it done first hand.
this article is amazing i never new that fish can get skin cancer or any kind of cancer. I think that its very amazing how they take them into sergery like if it was a real person. Its amazing to see how much people are wiling to spend to save their fish but i cant believe that they spend thousands of dollars i think that thats to much for a fish that can cost ten cents.
This really shows how people can grow attactched to their animals and how humans are so diffrent. people can really care about things even if it costs up to $1,000 or more even if they were worth only $10 or less. this also could lead to newer things for human surgery or new things we didnt know about animals. i think this really is a good thing for people and humans even if it mostly does sound crazy.
From $100-$1000 dollars fish owners will spend money on surgeries for their fish? Thats incredible. And no wonder why the Aquatic Medicine Residence Program is new! No one ever thought it to be so important. But now that Americans own more fish than they do cats or dogs--someone's gotta keep what makes up happy alive right? I thought it was kinda gross when the guy kissed his fish. But the narrator had a point when she said maybe later from now our kids will be wondering why did our grandparents EVER flush their fish down the toilet instead of giving them surgery?
Its strange to me tha ta great Harvard biologist said that we have a biophilia or the love of other organisms. I think that its cool that Greg Lewbart does surgery on the one pound goldfish named Comet which has skin cancer. Im intrigued that Lewbart and his colleagues are the first in this study. Its amazing to me that most of the equpment that they are using is inventions that they invented.
Those people really love fish. Its kind of ridiculous that someone would spend a couple thousand dollars on something that hardly lives a few years. If you spend thousands of dollars on something it should be a long term investment like a house or a car. I didn't realize that fish could get skin cancer though, so thats interesting.
This is so CRAZY!! i cant believe that people would spend thousands of dollars for a fish to have surgery. They even have a tube of water going through comets mouth so they could fix him. I though it was pretty amazing how they were able to give him anastasia so it didn't feel any pain. I tough it was cool how the surgeons were saving that fish from skin cancer and taking ther time with him. I never thought that a fish could get skin cancer though. I also though it was interesting to see how they put pins and screws in that koi fish to help her back so that she can live a natural life in the pond with her friends. i think its amazing how fish surgeries are common in vet places to fix up your fish thats pretty cool.
Wow peoples infatuation for their pets are pretty incredible especially when it comes to gold fish! Thats pretty crazy how someone can care enough to pay more than they bought the fish for a surgery or any other kind of need. I didnt know fish could get skin cancer... let alone be treated as a patient and undergo surgery! This video was really interesting and really caught my attention
True, I think we can all agree that nobody finds it important to operate on a goldfish... But what if this was a rare shark or one of the last breeding species of a type of fish? Also, from an apreciative standpoint- what an amazing world we live in where this kind of technology is used not only on fish, but humans? Did anyone consider the fact that embryonic humans live in amniotic fluid? Maybe this kind of surgery could be used on developing humans with problems. Great job Everybody!

Wow this is amazing and such a shock that a fish can have skin cancer. The surgery can range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. Which is ridiculous. I think that it's dumb to spend that much money on a fish! Another interseting thing is that the surgens can preform CAT scans and MRI's on the fish, which I never knew was even possible.
