Though one has smooth skin and the other spiny skin--Sea Urchins and humans are surprisingly related. They share more than 7,000 genes. Scientists are using them to unlock human diseases such as Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, Muscular Dystrophy and Cancer. Even doctors can better understand infertility from the Sea Urchins, giving birth to more than 20 million eggs. Sea Urchins are one of the few invertebrates sharing more genes with humans than fruit flies and worms. Cristina Calestani, a geneticist studying Sea Urchins and their link to humans, reveals that there is a match between human and Sea Urchins amino acids. The hope is that from Sea Urchins, we may find a new set of antibiotic and antiviral compounds to fight various infectious diseases.

Sea Urchins are important to study because they help us to understand different diseases. Such diseases include cancer, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and muscular dystrophy. Even though these creatures look nothing like humans they are amazingly similar. We share 7,000 of the same genes. They are one of few invertebrates that share more genes with humans than fruit flies or worms. Many of the amino acid sequences are a perfecert match to those of humans, so says a geneticist studying Sea Urchins Cristina Calestani. Through their DNA scientists are able to learn how to treat and prevent diseases in humans. Infertility is another problem that sea urchins can help solve. A sea urchin can give birth to more than 20 million eggs and can help scientists to better understand infertility. Some of the amino acid sequences in a sea urchin and human match up. It is also helpful for studying purposes that a sea urchin can reproduce many offspring quickly. The sea urchins have the same genes as humans for vision, hearing, and smelling, but they do not have eyes, ears or a nose. It is interesting that a creature that seems so different from us actualy is so closely related to us.

The fact that humans and sea urchins have 7,000 genes in common is so astonishing. We are using that to help unlock many other severe and life threatening human diseases to help prevent and find cures for them. "So sea urchins and humans share a common ancestor," Cristina Calestani. This is truly baffling that humans and sea urchins share a common ancestor. There is hope that they can help us save many lives in the future and that should be the new main goal for scientists.

I just read today, that scientists mapped the gene for epilepsy, the disease which gives people seizures. You see, if scientists can map a gene, they can create medicines easier to manage the illnesses they create. With sea urchins reproducing very quickly and in great numbers, scientists have a test subject to use that has many common genes to us.

sea urchins share more than seven thousand geans with humans.even though they dont even look like any thing like a human we do share some genes with them. they can be used as a help both medical and to see how genes work. they are also easy to use as experiments compaied to other animal test subjects. and can be easy to manage. but more importantly used to help fight diseases for people or even to help with fertility.

A urchins map of DNA may point us in the direction to fully understanding how genes work, therefore helping doctors diagnose more efficiently and provide the best treatment possible.

Sea Urchins are very usefull in the fact that they can be used to study cures for cancer, alzheimer's disease, parkinson's disease, and muscular dystrophy.7,000 of our genes are the same as the sea urchins. They are one of few invertebrates that share more genes with humans than any other being. Everyone wrote pretty much the same entry and all had very good points. I agree with samantha because we have almost the same post !

hi mr. gardner, sorry i couldn't get this in sooner, but like i told you, my computer was broken.

sea urchins and humans share a common ancestor, and consequently, 7000 common genes. because of this close relation, scientists can track infertility, epilepsy, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and cancer! hopefully their research will find cures with antibiotics and antivirals. this new research can pave the way for cures in all sorts of diseases and bodily function in humans, all from a small, prickly sea creature!

these creatures are important to study because they are one of the few invertebrates that share a good amount of genes with humans, even more so than the fruit fly and the worm. Throught the studying of Sea Urchants they hope to find antiviral compounds to fight various infectious diseases. Sea Urchants give birth to over 20 million eggs(dont think theyll be going exstinct any time soon)

Sea Urchins are surprisingly similar to humans. We come from a common ancestor, and we share more than 7000 genes. This is useful for studying genes that cause diseases. If a person gets a disease scientists will easily be able to identify why they have the disease or if it is a genetic disease. Usng Sea Urchins doctors will be able to understan why certain people arent fertile.

It is very fascinating that sea urchins share a common ancestor with humans and have more than 7,000 of the same genes. Researchers are using sea urchins to better understand some diseases and how to treat them. Some diseases are cancer, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and muscular dystrophy. Infertility may be another problem the sea urchin can help solve. Sea urchin's don't have eyes, ears or a nose, but they have the genes humans have for vision, hearing and smelling. Sea urchin's are known for strong immune systems and long life spans. the crazy thing is that humans and sea urchins share about 7,000 genes. that is more than a fruit fly or worm. you would never be able to tell because sea urchins are echinoderms which mean they have spiny skin. human have smooth skin and are much larger. these creatures can help us better understand diseases such as muscular dystrophy, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. they have a few of the same amino acid sequence that is a perfect match. A great ting about sea urchins is that they give birth to 20 million eggs. they can really help with infertility.

Sea Urchins are helping us to understand different diseases including cancer, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and muscular dystrophy. Even though these creatures aern't very similar on the oustide, they do share 7,000 of the same genes as us humans. Fortunately the continous study of sea urchins will allow us to prevent certain diseases and solve infertility.

wow, I didn't know such an opposite looking creature can actually be so similar to us humans. They share more than 7,000 genes and are now used to unlock human diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, parkinson's disease, muscular dystrophy and cancer. Hopefully, scientists search for a new set of antibiotic and antiviral compounds to fight various dangerous diseases through the help up of sea urchins.
